SCHOLARSHIPS

Lee VFW Post 893 offers two scholarships to any student enrolled in the Lee Middle & High School District. Lee Middle & High School students will receive a $50.00 cash incentive just for entering. The two top essays from each scholarship will also receive a $100 award from the Lee VFW.

  • The first place winners (from each Post) will automatically advance to compete in the VFW District-9 (Berkshire County VFW Posts) competition.
  • The First Place District 9 winner will advance to the Massachusetts State VFW competition.
  • The First Place winner of the State competition will advance to the VFW National competition.
There are numerous financial awards at every level for entrants. Read below for more information and to download an application. 
 
Note: The forms available here (below) are for Lee Middle and High School students only. If you have a student from another school system then click here to go to the VFW National Website for Youth Scholarships and use the forms found there. Search for a VFW Post near your "school system" as all student entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, October 31, 2021 and you can submit your application through your local post.

Voice of Democracy 

This years theme is "America: Where do we go from here?" 

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 64,500 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. 

The national first place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000. Want to apply? Patriot's Pen

This years theme is "How Can I Be A Good American".

Each year more than 165,400 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000! 

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
